W. SIMMEN FLINTLOCK RIFLE W. SIMMEN FLINTLOCK RIFLE
54 Cal; very good bore, excellent stock, 43'' barrel, This rifle was built by William Simmen of Vanderbilt PA approximately 30 years ago, one of about a dozen or so flintlock rifles he built at the time, when he was "just playing around" building these guns. Now a full time gunsmith, stockmaker and firearms restorer. The quality of workmanship is oustanding. Browned part octagon barrel with fixed sights, mounted in a beautifully finished curly maple stock with brass mountings. The stock has tasteful scroll/leaf hand carving, just the right amount, with shell pattern carving behind the upper tang. Button release patch box on the right bordered with brass wire inlay. Sunburst inset on the left side cheekrest. Small brass toeplate. Oval silver nameplate inset on top of the grip. The bottom of the forend has some brass wire inlay with a silver dolls head just forward of the trigger guard tang. This rifle has the classic look of a slightly fancy fowler with the mostly round barrel and club butt, but with the surprise of a highly accurate 54 caliber rifled barrel. The action is excellent with a light pull and smooth break. There is some minor pitting on the barrel around the touch hole. This rifle now shows just enough age to give it a high degree of pleasant eye appeal. That beautiful stock will look fabulous decorating the area above your fireplace, and when that 10 pointer appears from the tree line in your back yard to take samples of your wifes birdfeeder seed, you can add his rack over the fireplace as well. Note: Illinois laws consider modern reproduction black powder firearms to be modern guns, an 01 FFL is required for transfer. FFL,
