BOER ZAR WESTLEY RICHARDS MARTINI RIFLE BOER ZAR WESTLEY RICHARDS MARTINI RIFLE
450-577 Martini; 80% blue, very good bore, fair stock, 33.25'' barrel, Manufactured for the ZAR (South African Boers) by Westley Richards & Co. and dated 1896 on top of the barrel knox, inside a triangle, at a time when the British and Boers still had good relations. It is thought that these rifles were made by Francotte in Belgium for Westley Richards, using an improved cocking indicator on the improved Martini Henry action, similar to the MKIV Martini military rifles. Blue metal finish, mounted in a walnut stock and forend. Fixed front and ladder rear sights. The upper band has a bayonet lug on the right side for a sabre bayonet. The frame is stamped on the left side with a triangle over WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO. The right side of the frame is stamped MADE SPECIALLY FOR/Z A R. The barrel is stamped with British proofs, and behind the rear sight WESTLEY RICHARDS & CO, and in front of the rear sight HENRY RIFLING. The rifle is complete with an original cleaning rod. The metal appears to have been wiped down with a cold blue finish. The wood has been sanded, removing any markings that may have been present. The forend has cracks on both sides in front of the frame, the worst on the left side. The butt has a crack on both sides of the wrist behind the frame. Mechanically excellent. The bore has shine and strong rifling, showing some darkness along the grooves. Antique.,
